The two lonely souls embark on a new journey together
Plot
Released from prison, Lang returns to his hometown in northwest China. As part of a dog patrol tasked with cleaning up stray dogs ahead of the 2008 Olympics, he bonds with a black stray. Eddie Peng (the main character) has developed such a close bond with Xin, the film’s dog, that he adopts him after filming.

As the story unfolds, we learn a little more about her reasons and his distant relationship with his zookeeper father, and we learn that he was once one of the most prominent citizens of the popular locale. strip. With the Beijing Olympics (2008) fast approaching, the government is putting a lot of emphasis on improving the place, and it shows some pretty significant « improvements. » to his home on the edge of the Gobi Desert.
One particularly embarrassing nugget finds him quarantined in his own home, and as the relationship begins to solidify, we also get a sense of how much animosity there is towards this man
With much of it already slated for demolition, and much of its heart (and soul) already removed, the authorities are taking notice of a serious problem: hundreds of feral dogs are roaming around, possibly spreading rabies. There’s one particularly skinny black one, who’s worth 1,000 yuan if caught, and is the target of a biker named “Lang.” The thing is, this guy’s no slouch and he’s soon being chased (and coded) by more. With bulldozers never far away, his ailing dad’s zoo can no longer take care of its tenants, and the vengeful butcher “Hu” (Hu Xiaoguang) and his vengeful thugs are drawn into the story of this newfound friendship, which is quite engaging.
What’s the point of this inhospitable place in this place?
It’s predictable at times, but it’s really Peng’s effort, mostly dialogue-free against a backdrop of relentless winds, dust, and trains whizzing through an increasingly lifeless city, that gives it little impact. It’s not so much that the city is being vacated for the Olympics, though that’s clearly director Hu Guan’s idea, but rather that this was a city to begin with. It’s bleak and desolate, a concrete oasis in the middle of nowhere, and the setting works well, as the man himself seems lonely, isolated, emotionally and physically rootless.
Be warned that not much happens, but I enjoyed it
It’s a slow watch, but not one that lasts two hours, and it sums up the mundane existence, the lack of choices, and the longing for a real sense of freedom quite well.
