The land grab threatens to destroy the declining dynasty
Plot
When the massive Lawson cattle station lacks an heir, Australia’s rival factions see a chance to seize control. The series has been filmed across the Northern Territory and South Australia in locations so remote they’re barely inhabited – let alone shown on screen. Locations include UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park – with special permission from traditional owners – and Tipperary Station, a real, working cattle station so big it has its own airfield and school.
Yes, it’s compared to Yellowstone
Yes, there are the same over-the-top plots, conflicts and wacky characters. Yes, you can point to many similar problems. For me, two main problems are things that just happen because they have to move the plot forward.
Plots that don’t make sense
The family patriarch simply makes a decision on the succession without really weighing up the pros and cons of each option. Secondly, there are plot holes that exist for similar reasons to move the plot forward. The station is supposed to be the size of Belgium, but is run by a family (four members at first, later expanded to a little more) and what appears to be a skeleton crew.
Tensions rise, conflicts deepen, passions are aroused
But of course, greedy corporations try to take it away from them. I also didn’t like how everything just keeps building up. and then things are resolved (in a way) within half an hour.
The camerawork is good, the nature looks beautiful
But it’s not a bad show if you look beyond that.
